The Meaning of Our Chants

Tuesday evening, Adeesha gave an excellent talk on the meaning behind some of the chants that we do every week, specifically the “Qualities of the Buddha” and “Qualities of the Dhamma.” Personally, I learned a lot from his talk. Adeesha has generously made his notes available. If you’d like to practice, here is an mp3 file of the chants. All of the files referenced in this post are also available through the Liturgy page.

The Five Hindrances

Our last Dhamma talk was on the Five Hindrances.  I mentioned the “bowl of water” similes, which are given in the Sangaravo Sutta. Ñyanaponika Thera has assembled a selection of passages about the hindrances from the Pali Canon. This also includes a good introductory essay. Finally, there’s an excellent talk on the hindrances by Ajahn Dhiravamso.

Resources on the Noble Eightfold Path

After Adeesha’s excellent Dharma talk last night, I thought some of you might be interested in learning more about the Noble Eightfold Path. Adeesha specifically referenced the work of Bhikkhu Bodhi on this subject. For the canonical descriptions of the Path, see the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta and the Magga-vibhanga Sutta. Finally, there is an excellent book by Bhante Gunaratana on the Path.
